CamRanger • Wireless DSLR Control and Image Review

CamRangerCamRanger is another new device that connects to many Canon or Nikon DSLR’s via their USB port to wirelessly control your camera from your iPhone or iPad and also review the images you’ve taken on the same device. I had a chance to see it in action and talk with the engineer who developed it while I was at MacWorld in San Francisco earlier this month.

This is a very impressive product in terms of the wide range of functions you can control and the ability to review images you’ve just taken as well as any of the images stored on your camera’s memory card. There is a free CamRanger iOS app that works with your iPad, iPhone or iPod touch. The unit is battery powered with a rechargeable/replaceable battery, so you can carry spare batteries. Battery life is said to vary but about 6 hours is typical for most functions.

It creates a wireless network that allows for connections up to 150 feet. It comes with a protective case, the USB cable to connect to your DSLR and an ethernet cable for future firmware upgrades (thank you – very thoughtful of the developers to include this ability).

The display on an iPad is well laid out to include many controls, a filmstrip of thumbnails of images and a larger view of the image you just shot or chose from the thumbnails. CamRanger is available now and can be purchased at Amazon for $299.99. The iOS app is free.
